Equal Temperament Tuning

In equal temperament (the standard tuning system), each semitone has a frequency ratio of 2^(1/12), approximately 1.05946. This means each note is about 5.95% higher in frequency than the note below it.

Standard Pitch

The international standard pitch sets A4 (the A above middle C) at exactly 440 Hz. All other note frequencies are calculated relative to this reference. Some orchestras tune slightly higher (A4 = 442-443 Hz) for a brighter sound.
