How Frequency Relates to Pitch

Every musical note corresponds to a specific frequency. The standard tuning reference is A4 = 440 Hz. Each octave doubles the frequency, so A5 = 880 Hz and A3 = 220 Hz. The 12 notes within each octave are spaced by equal ratios (equal temperament).

What Are Cents?

Cents measure how far a frequency is from the nearest note. One semitone = 100 cents. A reading of +20 cents means the frequency is slightly sharp (above the note), while -20 cents means it is slightly flat (below the note).
